My Top 4 Tips to Stay Motivated

Crunches Then Cocktails Justine Moore My Top 4 Tips to Stay Motivated

One of the questions I get most often is: “How do you stay motivated?”

I’m not going to lie, I struggle with my own motivation level more often than you’d think!

There are plenty of days when I don’t feel like working out, but I do so anyway because I love the results and, more importantly, I love how it makes me FEEL afterwards: strong, confident, more energetic & productive… and just happier overall!

The same goes for eating right… it hasnt' always been easy for me.  I LOOOVE to eat (both healthy food AND the not-so-healthy stuff) and I also enjoy my cocktails... obviously haha. To balance this out while maintaining my ideal body composition requires serious motivation some days...

So HERE ARE MY 4 BEST TIPS FOR STAYING MOTIVATED… STRATEGIES I’VE FOUND OVER THE YEARS TO HELP ME When I feel like lying eat bed with a pint of ben & jerry's phish Food (best Flavor, amiright?!):

1. Schedule your workouts ahead of time.

Don’t just say “I’ll hit the gym 4 times this week.”  When?  Where?  What workout will you be doing?  Schedule it, and STICK TO IT, just as you would for any other appointment or obligation.  This is one of the (many!) reasons I love classes... you sign up & have to show up... on time!

2. Change up your workout routine frequently.

If you find yourself in a workout rut, start a new workout program or try a new class or different form of exercise.  This keeps things more interesting AND it will enable you to get better results, by keeping your body from adapting to a routine.  I shake up my routine constantly- I have to, or I get bored quickly!!  I do a mix of strength training, HIIT, kickboxing, jogging, spin classes at CycleBar Mequon, classes at Pure Barre, and yoga... so it never feels dull or repetitive!

3. Set realistic goals that make you feel EMPOWERED.

Having unrealistic, unattainable goals is one of the quickest ways to kill your motivation.  Don’t set yourself up for disappointment- set goals that are attainable and measurable, and then create a plan of attack to get there.  If you aren't in the habit of working out right now, don’t start off saying you’ll work out 6 days a week… let's be honest, that’s just not realistic, and you'll burn yourself out before you have time to make any real changes.  Start with small changes you can commit to consistently, and build on that over time.  Slow and steady wins the race!  For more tips on setting realistic & empowering goals, check out this video on setting BEHAVIOR goals vs. outcome goals.

4. Keep things fresh.

Buy new workout clothes, download new music & playlists, visit a new gym on a day pass or week-trial, or take your workout outdoors for a change of scenery.  Play around with new recipes, check out new healthy restaurants in town, or try a food- or combination- you've never had before!  (For example at the moment, I am OBSESSED with putting a fried egg over a salad. I've eaten 8,345,942 salads in my life but throw a fried egg on there and... Mind. Blown.)  Small changes can do wonders when it comes to making a healthy lifestyle something you truly enjoy and CHOOSE to do, rather than feeling like you "have" to do it.

I hope these tips will help you keep things FRESH and exciting!! Let me know what helps YOU stay motivated in the comments below.
