My Microblading Experience

Last August my life changed forever…

I took the plunge and got microblading on my brows!! 😬  Okay, that might sound dramatic, I know, but it was something I had wanted for a long time… and I am SO happy I did it!

Before microblading I was filling in my brows with makeup once or twice every single day.  Even if I was meeting with early morning clients, or going to work out and didn’t put on ANY other makeup, I would fill in my brows.

My natural hair color is super dark, but my brows didn't get the memo… so I always felt weird if they weren’t filled in.

If you add up the 5 minutes or so it took me every day, and multiply that over the course of a year, that’s over 30 hours!  Yikes.  Pretty crazy when you look at it that way!

Okay so what is microblading?

Microblading is a tattoo-like technique where a small blade is used to add pigment (as opposed to a needle in tattoos… so it doesn’t go as deep into the skin!)  The goal is to fill in your eyebrows with hair-like strokes of color for a natural, realistic appearance.

Microblading is a semi-permanent procedure, as it tends to fade after 1-2 years depending on skin type, skin care and sun exposure.  It is not permanent like other cosmetic procedures for the brows.

Where did I get mine done?

NOT ALL MICROBLADING IS CREATED EQUAL!  This is in all caps for a reason.

I have seen some less-than-stellar microblading work, and it is not pretty.  This procedure might fade in 1-2 years, but in the meantime it’s basically a tattoo on your face.  So don’t mess around with who you trust to do your microblading!  It’s about more than someone having a certification… microblading is an art form in my opinion.

I highly suggest going to someone who has a solid reputation and can show you their work on previous clients.  If you haven’t seen pictures of their work or know someone who went to them I would keep searching.

If you’re near my neck of the woods (greater Milwaukee area) I highly, highly suggest seeing my microblading technician, the Brow Queen herself: Beauty By Diana.  Not only is Diana one of the sweetest humans you’ll ever meet but she works magic on your brows.  She’s always booked out months in advance (for good reason) but I promise you, she is worth the wait.  Check out her Instagram for tons of pictures of her very happy clients’ transformations.

What is the appointment like?  And did it hurt?

First, Diana and I discussed my “brow goals.”  She offered her expert opinion and made sure it matched the vision I had for my brows.

Next she measured and outlined the plan for where she’d be placing the strokes, so I had a chance to visually see what the end result would look like.  Once I was 100% comfortable with the game plan she applied a topical numbing cream to set for approximately 25 minutes. Once the numbing cream took effect, Diana started the actual microblading process.  She checked in on me a ton for pain and every time I was like, “this is nothin’!!”

I have two tattoos (on the back of my neck and my wrist) and this hurt 50 times LESS than those.  I would say I have a fairly high pain tolerance but ladies, if you can handle a bikini wax, you can do this.  I’d take this any day over a Brazilian!!

It was over and done with quicker than I expected. The actually blading part was maybe 20-25 minutes.

What can I expect afterwards?

My healing process was pretty easy and painless.  I won’t lie, I was pretty nervous.  Again, this is on your face so it’s not so easy to hide.

You have to avoid sun, water and perspiration to the brow area for the first ten days.  Thankfully I don’t sweat a ton so I was able to work out.  You also have to be very careful while washing your hair and your face, to avoid getting products or moisture on your brows.

You can expect some scabbing, peeling and color changes to the area as the skin heals and the pigment begins to settle. The color first appears darker than it will be, then it fades, then it returns.  Weird, I know… but thankfully Diana explained all of it in detail beforehand, so I didn’t worry when it happened.

Again, my healing process was really mild.  I had a tiny bit of scabbing but it was something only I really noticed.  No one else could tell.  And after a few weeks I had the most beautiful brows I could have ever asked for- no makeup required!

Would I recommend it?

Hell YES!  Not only do my brows look WAY better than they ever did before microblading, but it’s way less upkeep.  I only get threaded every other month or so… where I used to go every 2-3 weeks.
PLUS, I get those 30 plus hours per year of my life back to do something better with my precious time.  Like online shopping. Or laughing at hilarious memes.  Or sipping prosecco.  Or sleeping.  That’s winning in my book!
