2018: My Journey To Happiness & Healing, Part II

A look back at my 2018 Journey of Healing & Growth…

We all need healing.  We’ve all experienced trauma in our lives… and it doesn’t matter how big or how small an event or incident is.  It’s not about comparing our stories or our pain to other people’s… the point is, we’ve all been hurt.

I recently heard (on a podcast, of course!) that 98% of our behavior is from our subconscious programming.

And guess when that subconscious programming gets programmed?

Childhood.

That’s right.  As children we are little sponges, going through the world making meaning of everything.  As children we are constantly from the behaviors and patterns demonstrated to us from our parents, families, teachers and all those we come into contact with.

Some of this programming is useful, and some is quite destructive.

We grow up and a lot of this programming becomes outdated, and is no longer serving us… but it’s still our programming.

It’s like software on a computer- there can be a lot of viruses that need to be cleaned up to function at 100%.

We’re sort of like that.

Through healing and re-programming we can clean out that old garbage weighing us down and choose more empowering beliefs, patterns and behaviors to begin truly living our best lives.

That has been my quest this year and these are some of the resources that enabled me to reach this wonderful place in my life…

Spiritual healers, coaches and mentors:

Nicole Moza @ Moza Wellness: Intuitive Healer and Massage Therapist.  I met Nicole on February 8th, 2018 and my life has never been the same.  Nicole has been the catalyst for SO much healing, growth and positive change in my life.  She is a blessing in my life and I am eternally grateful.  If you are ready for your world to be rocked in the best way possible, GO SEE HER!

Bella Healing Hypnosis: Hypnotherapy, Emotional Freedom Technique (a.k.a. “tapping”) and coaching. Iza Bella worked absolute wonders in helping me transform my relationship with myself.  I originally went to see her to work on quieting my inner critic.  She helped me do that, and so much more.  When I leave her office it’s like weight has been lifted from me, every time.  She has empowered me to truly step into my happiest, best life and become the woman I am meant to be.

Katherine Gramann: Brand strategist.  Biz coach.  Fellow manatee lover.  #1 girl crush.  All-around incredible human.  To know Katherine is to love her.  This incredible woman has helped me grow in my business and in life this year in more ways that I could ever list.  If you want soul-centered business or branding guidance, this is your girl.

Health Coach Institute: I have to give a big shout out to Health Coach Institute for being the source of SO much change the past 2 years.  I completed the Become A Health Coach certification in 2017, and I’m now halfway through their Mastery program, including TCM, Transformational Coaching Method, which is the coaching technique I practice with clients.  Besides all of the tools I’ve gained professionally, I’ve gotten to be a student of this work for 2 years and it has made me a brand new human.  Eternally grateful, to say the least!

12 months… 12 books.

I didn’t set out to read “a book a month”… (my goal is actually more than that) but it just so happened that I read 12 books this year, plus 2 audiobooks. (You Are A Badass At Making Money and Genius Foods.)

My Must-Reads for… EVERYONE:

You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero.  Funny.  Fantastic.  Life changing.  Run, don’t walk, to your nearest bookstore and get this.  (I’m kidding, order it on Amazon Prime!)  But seriously.  Just read this.  You’re welcome.

The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks.  I read this one on my trip to Mexico over Thanksgiving and it was such a game changer.  It’s all about getting past our “upper limits” to live our happiest most fulfilling lives- without sabotaging ourselves.  (Side note: I’m a wee bit obsessed with the topic of sabotage so this one was an all-time fave!!)

The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown.  “Let Go of Who You Think You’ve Supposed To Be and Embrace Who You Are.”  If you’re not familiar with Brene Brown’s work, get familiar and thank me later.  I realized this year I was a complete shame junkie, all day, every day.  Brown’s work has helped me turn that around and life a more wholehearted life.  Ahhhhhh.  Doesn’t that feel GOOD?!

Unf*ck Yourself by Gary John Bishop.  A great read to wake you up.  To quote the back of the book, “If you’re easily offended, stop reading now.  This isn’t the book for you.  But if you’re looking for a book that gives you the power to find everything you’ve ever wanted residing within you, you’re in luck.”  I’ll leave it at that. ;-)

Must-reads For WOMEN:

Girl, Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis.  You know how some books have a way of finding you at the perfect time?  This book found me right before my honeymoon, and I'm so glad it did!  The message of accepting imperfections with grace was exactly what I needed at that time.

I loved this book so much I lent it to my Mom as soon as I finished it, and have sent friends copies as well.  Get it, please.

P.S. She’s coming out with another book in early 2019… Hooray!

(Side note: My husband Scott refers to this as “Wash Your Face, Girl,” and for some reason I think that’s hilarious.)

How To Stop Feeling Like Sh*t by Andrea Owen.  Great title, right?  Owen breaks down 14 habits that are holding you back from happiness.  A lot of habits I was (and still am) guilty of.  My personal favorite chapters were: “Being An Asshole To Yourself: Learn to Manage Your Inner Critic” and “The Demolition Derby of Your Life: Self-Sabotage.”  (Did someone say sabotage?!  I’m listening…)

For anyone on a Spiritual Quest:

Ask And It Is Given by Esther and Jerry Hicks.  Abraham Hicks has changed my life… and if you know what I’m talking about you’re probably thinking “mine too.”  If you want to harness the Law of Attraction and start manifesting the life of your dreams, look no further.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.  A quick read about finding your life’s purpose.  I had to check this one out because I feel like it’s a classic in the personal growth world.

Conversations With God by Neale Donald Walsch.  I have to be honest, a few years ago someone recommended this book to me and I was not in the right place in my life to read it.  I thought it was blasphemous based on my religious upbringing.  I re-visited it this year and read it over a few days and truly enjoyed it now that I am in a different space spiritually.

For my fellow Coaches:

The Prosperous Coach by Steve Chandler and Rich Litvin.  I HIGHLY recommend this one to any and all coaches, or anyone interested in becoming a coach.

For Couples:

Beyond Mars And Venus by John Gray.  Full disclosure: I did not love all of this book, but I think there are some really important things to understand about the differences between men and women, and how hormones can get in the way of a happy relationship if you aren’t aware.  My husband and I read this together and discussed it, and we have a happier, healthier relationship because of it.

P.S. for couples: if you have not read the 5 Love Languages, or take that quiz to understand which love language each of you needs that is a MUST-DO.

For anyone who loves to travel, or just for an interesting read:

The Geography of Bliss: One Grump’s Search for the Happiest Places in the World by Eric Weiner.  This was super interesting and felt like I was actually traveling around the world with the author.  I learned so much about other cultures and gained insight on what REALLY matters in life in terms of happiness.

Whew!

Are you inspired yet?

I also have to give a shout out to podcasts.

There are SO many I love (maybe I’ll do a whole separate blog post on this) but this year’s growth journey wouldn’t be complete without shouting out Lori Harder.  She has my #1 favorite podcast by a long shot.  I had the pleasure of finally meeting Lori In person in November, when I attended her live event with my Mom.

I absolutely love this woman.  Her transition from fitness model and competitor into a personal growth guru is beyond inspiring to me.  Her vulnerability is so beautiful.  I feel like she is always speaking directly to me… and she has incredible guests on her show.  If you haven’t subscribed to her podcast by now, DO IT RIGHT NOW!!

In closing, YOU, my friend, DESERVE TO BE HAPPY.

So, so, SO stinkin’ happy!  So seriously, go get it.  Read the books.  Do the meditations, the journaling, get coaching and spiritual guidance.  Chase after what feels good and what sets your soul on fire… and run from anything that does the opposite!

Your happiness awaits you.
